On January 16, 1981 U.S. Attorney General Benjamin R. Civiletti confirmed U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s (USEPA) authority to investigate violations of the criminal prohibitions contained in enumerated statutes in the letter.

On April 27, 1984 F. Henry Habicht, II, Assistant Attorney General, Land and Natural Resources Division, U.S. Department of Justice, letter to Courtney M. Price, Assistant Administrator USEPA, confirmed interim special deputation of USEPA criminal investigators under specified parameters, to include closer cooperation between USEPA investigators and the FBI.
